Pasadena Honors the Legacy of Mickey Gilley

The City of Pasadena and the family of country music legend, Mickey Gilley, will host a tribute in his honor on June 9 at the Pasadena Convention Center. The public is encouraged to attend this free event that will celebrate the life of the Grammy-winning musician who put Pasadena on the map. Mayor Jeff Wagner, along with Mr. Gilley’s friends and family will be on hand to share their personal memories of the man they lovingly called, “MG”.
Gilley’s nightclub opened in 1971, growing to become the largest dance hall in the world according to The Guinness Book of World Records. By 1980, Gilley’s would be featured in the classic movie, Urban Cowboy. Artists like Stevie Ray Vaughn, George Strait, Alabama, Willie Nelson, Crystal Gayle, Hank Williams Jr., George Jones, Loretta Lynn, Conway Twitty and of course Gilley’s cousin, Jerry Lee Lewis, all performed there over the years.
The memorial event will feature videos, musical performances and tributes to the life of Mickey Gilley. The historical and economic impacts of Gilley’s contributions to Pasadena will also be recognized. Pastor Don Piper, whose personal story was the focus of the best-selling book and movie, “90 Minutes in Heaven” will give the eulogy.
