WHO ARE SOROPTIMISTS?
The word Soroptimist was coined from two Latin words, "soror" and "optima" which loosely translates as "best for women".  Soroptimists are women of all ages, cultures and ethnic groups. They are working moms and single women. Small business owners and corporate executives, attorneys, teachers, and physicians. Soroptimists are leaders across all professional disciplines who also serve as role models for younger women at the beginning of their careers. The common thread that connects all Soroptimists is their desire to make a difference for other through volunteer service.

Locally Soroptimist support 'THE ROSE' a non profit breast imaging service for women and men who otherwise could not afford to get a mammogram. They also take people who can pay and that makes it possible to treat more women who can't. The sponsor a school for the Dare Program. Offer a scholarship to San Jacinto Jr. College for 2 years.  Recognize local high school seniors for their involvement in community and school activities. Give a monetary award annually to a woman wanting to return back to the working world. This year the organization recognized 6 local women for the community work on International Woman Day. In 2002 they will be doing a one day seminar again in the Southeast Area for women concentrating on women's issues.
