FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

"REMEMBER THE MAINE" AT THE BATTLESHIP TEXAS

Parks and Wildlife and Battleship TEXAS State Historic Site present "Remember the MAINE" February 16th & 17th, 2008. This patriotic weekend event will feature a memorial service for the USS MAINE, sister ship of the first Battleship TEXAS and living history exhibits featuring the Spanish American War from Army, Navy and Marine Corps of that time period. The MAINE was commissioned in 1895 and sunk during the Spanish-American War in the Harbor of Havana, Cuba on February 15, 1898.

Following the Spanish-American War, the first Battleship TEXAS was repaired and recommissioned in 1902, and served in various roles until 1911, when her name was changed to SAN MARCOS to allow the name TEXAS to be assigned to Battleship number 35 (the present Battleship Texas). She was later struck from the Navy list and sunk as a target in Tangier Sound in Chesapeake Bay.

A memorial service honoring Americans who have died in the service of our country will be held on the bow of the Battleship TEXAS at 3:00 p.m. on Saturday February 16th and at 12:00 p.m. on Sunday February 17th.

The Battleship TEXAS is located 22 miles east of downtown Houston. From Interstate 610 east, take Texas Highway 225 east for 11 miles to Texas Highway 134 (Battleground Road), continue north about 3 miles to the park. Or take I-10 east to Lynchburg Road, go south 2 miles to ride the free Lynchburg Ferry. Once across the Houston Ship Channel, it will be a short drive on Texas Highway 134 to the park.

Admissions cost:
$ 10.00 Adults (13 years and age and older)
$ 5.00 Seniors (65 and over)
